Four Colorado schools are listed among the top national universities in the latest annual ranking of America’s best colleges by U.S. News & World Report, released Friday.University of Colorado-Boulder placed 77th on the magazine’s 2009 list — highest in the state — out of 262 national universities evaluated. It was ranked 79th on last year’s list.
Colorado School of Mines ranked 80th among national universities, University of Denver 89th, and Colorado State University 125th.
“National universities” are defined as offering a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as conducting research.
Topping the national-universities list is Harvard University, followed by Princeton University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
U.S. News & World Report said it evaluated more than 1,400 colleges in various categories for its latest rankings. They are based on as many as 15 statistical measures of academic success in each category.
On the magazine’s list of “master’s universities,” broken down by region, Regis University was ranked 28th in the West and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs placed 32nd.
“Master’s universities” are defined as offering undergraduate degrees and some master’s programs but few doctoral degrees.
The United State Air Force Academy ranked No. 1 among baccalaureate colleges in the West — those primarily offering undergraduate degrees — and No. 9 among undergraduate engineering programs.
